What They Are Like to Live With

Though born and bred to hunt, Redbone Coonhounds make surprisingly relaxed, gentle and playful household companions, especially when socialized from an early age. As long as they get plenty of outdoor exercise, Redbone Coonhounds will be perfectly happy hanging around the house with the family. Keen and intelligent, they are also naturally curious: Make sure your back yard is fenced, and always keep your Redbone Coonhound on a leash in public.

Things You Should Know

Redbone Coonhounds can live as long as 12 years. Generally healthy, some may develop common coonhound issues like hip dysplasia, eye problems and hypothyroidism. They are relatively easy to groom. Brush them occasionally, and check their ears every week to prevent infection.

Redbone Coonhound History

In the late 18th century, Scottish immigrants brought red foxhounds to America. Sometime after the Civil War, hunters mixed these canines with Red Irish Foxhounds (and possibly Bloodhounds) to create the leaner, faster Redbone Coonhound. Redbone Coonhounds proved to be exemplary helpers, moving quickly over rough terrain, through forests, lakes and rivers.
