The staff of a bingo parlor in Dover, England, recently captured images of a touching act of kindness by a couple during a rainstorm.
The couple was walking during a rainstorm when they came across a German Shepherd that had been left tied to a lamppost outside of a Mark’s & Spencer department store while the owner was shopping. Instead of just looking sympathetically at the dog and moving on like most of us, they decided to do something. The man took off his coat and held it over the dog, sheltering it from the rain while his girlfriend stood there and helped.
The two of them stood there for 20 minutes in a downpour until the dog’s owner came out of the store.
Fortunately, they weren’t entirely without shelter themselves the whole time. Jon Sparkes, the assistant manager of Gala Bingo just across the street, watched the two getting drenched as they protected the dog and came out to give them two umbrellas.
“As you can see, the dude has taken his top off to protect the dog — the dog was there before the rain came,” he told the Dover Express newspaper. “They’ve selflessly protected the dog from rain, and we’ve seen that and gave them umbrellas. They were really grateful, and they waited there until the owner came back, who was also very grateful to the couple.”
When the owner came back, they tried to return the umbrellas to the bingo parlor, but Sparkes told them to keep them; they had earned them, he said. Certainly they’d earned much more than that, but it makes us feel a little better about the world to see people going so far out of their way to help a dog during a summer storm. The rain may not be as dangerous as being left in a hot car, but as we all know, it’s very uncomfortable, whether you have a fur coat or bare skin.
