There’s a certain drinking game at college get-togethers that involves a keg, two spotters, and a lack of common sense among all parties. It’s called a keg stand. The two people upend a third, keep him steady, shove a keg tap into his mouth, and make him drink, so he’s drinking upside down.
Two college idiots just did that to a dog, forcing the Lab to drink, and then they compounded that idiocy by posting a photo of it to Twitter.
The caption read: “Keg stands n Bits!”
They were soon arrested and charged with torturing and inuring an animal, and now the students — Shane Oliver and Robert Yates, both 20 — have to face a judge and might get expelled from school, thanks to the code of conduct.
“There are a lot of good kids at this school. Sometimes poor decisions are made. If they stop and asked themselves, is this the right thing to do?” Lt. Mark Cuzzupoli of the Brockport Police Department told TWC Rochester.
The photo first turned up SUNY Party Stories page on Twitter on Sunday. By Monday, it had gone viral, appearing on national sites. The dog is named Mya. Her owner was not at home when the photo was taken. Mya was taken to the Sweden Animal Shelter and is in good physical condition. She’ll remain there until a judge or law enforcement decide what to do with her, according to TWC Rochester.
TWC Rochester spoke to a vet about the incident, and he said that dogs react to alcohol much like humans do. He said that “giving a dog alcohol is like giving alcohol to a child,” because of a dog’s small body mass. “Younger dogs like Mya can have an even harder time breaking it down.”
One of the housemates came to the students’ defense: “I can’t explain their actions. I wasn’t here, but I just know all these kids. We’ve been living here for a year now. It’s not like we’re horrible people. It’s not like they meant to harm the dog or anything like that. We all love Mya, she’s a great dog,” said Luke Biondi.
The College at Brockport, however, is taking the matter seriously. It released a statement saying, “We were alarmed to learn of this disturbing photo. The college is investigating this matter and will take appropriate action once the details surrounding the photo are learned.”
