Bones Mello was once just your ordinary Italian Greyhound — hanging out, chasing squirrels, and being generally handsome. Then one day his human friend Katie made a startling discovery — Italian Greyhounds sort of look a lot like Imperial AT-ATs, à la The Empire Strikes Back. Katie works at LAIKA, the same folks resposible for the stop-motion animation featured in Coraline. That means she’s pretty clever and creative. She embarked on a mission to make the ultimate dog costume for Bones Mello.
You’ve probably seen the result — we featured it a while ago. Katie made the costume entirely by hand, with lightweight materials, attention to detail, and Bones’ comfort in mind. The extremely thorough costume garnered quite a bit of attention for Bones, who now has his own Facebook page and a flourish of followers.
But Bones’ fans became concerned when they hadn’t heard from the pup in a while.
Turns out the little guy had to be rushed to the vet after jumping off the bed and breaking a leg. Ah yes, just another day in the life of a pet parent. It’s amazing the amount of trouble dogs and kids manage to get themselves into.
Worry not — Bones is doing well, although he is confined to bed rest for eight long weeks. That’s like forever to a dog!
We here at Dogster are sending him our best get-well wishes. Feel better soon, Bones!
