Dexter’s Facebook page puts it beautifully: Dexter is a 13-year-old Pit Bull who was rescued about four years ago from a high-kill shelter in California. Though his origins are a mystery, the scars on his body are evidence of a life of neglect and abuse, and it’s suspected that he was used as a bait dog before being discarded. His spine is permanently damaged, but his heart is intact.
In August of this year, Dexter was diagnosed with Mast Cell Tumors. He’s undergone surgery to remove the tumors, but, because he’s older, it’s taking time to recover. Because of his age, his human friend has decided not to put the dog through chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
Confronting Dexter’s mortality, his human friend has decided she would rather the remainder of his life be one of comfort and love, and when he received his initial diagnosis, she decided to compile a bucket list for Dexter. What an amazing way to honor a dog who has been through so much.
Some of the sweet things included on Dexter’s bucket list are to learn the “Sit” command in another language, take a ride on a boat, become a therapy dog, and become a good canine citizen.
He also wants to receive postcards from all over the world. Details on where to send postcards can be found at Dexter’s Facebook page, where we got all these fabulous photos. Go follow Dexter and tell him Dogster sent you.
