Barkworthies Recalls Chicken Vittles Dog Chews

The dog treats are pulled from store shelves over salmonella fears.

On Dec. 24, Barkworthies of Richmond, VA, announced a recall on Barkworthies Chicken Vittles dog chews because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The packages have been on store shelves for a while: According to the company, they were distributed nationwide beginning on May 6, 2014. Fortunately, the company has received no reports of illness in either people or animals.

The affected products are packaged in 16 oz. plastic pouches, with the following information:

  • Barkworthies Chicken Vittles
  • Lot Code: 1254T1
  • Best Used by Date: May 2016
  • UPC: 816807011510

If you have a bag, you can fill out a form and return the unused product in a sealed bag to your place of purchase for a full refund. Call (877) 993-4257 for more info and visit the company’s recall page.

Routine testing by the Colorado Department of Agriculture uncovered the threat, when it discovered the presence of salmonella in a single lot of the product. According to the company, this batch had previously tested negative by a third-party independent laboratory prior to release for distribution to consumers.

The company said on its Facebook page, “We understand this is concerning to our customers, and this is why out of abundance of caution, we are voluntarily recalling this product to ensure that no questionable product is left in the marketplace. Barkworthies regrets this isolated incident and remains dedicated to providing you and your pets with the finest all natural treats and chews.”

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
