A few different people qualify as boneheads in this bizarre story, but we’re going with the city officials who refused to dig up a pregnant dog who was buried alive by workers fixing a sidewalk — even though that dog was barking and very much alive.
Let’s back up. Voronezh, Russia, recently. A sinkhole in a sidewalk outside an apartment building had been troubling residents for weeks, and workers finally arrived on the scene to repair the hole. Vadim Rustam and his wife, Aleksandra, noticed them, according to RT, before they left town for a few days.
When they returned, they heard whining and barking. From under the sidewalk. A dog was under there, under the sidewalk, the sidewalk the workers had just repaired.
What? How?
“We were shocked,” Aleksandra told Russian magazine Bloknot-Voronezh, according to RT. “We rushed to ask the neighbors what had happened. They only told us that the workers had fixed the hole.”
“I don’t believe that they just failed to notice the dog. It’s not a hamster. The workers probably just didn’t want to make an effort and retrieve the animal,” he continued, though we have no idea what the workers really knew. “The neighbors also proved to be indifferent. They understood the poor creature got trapped. But who wants to waste their time, getting their hands dirty? No one cared.”
But Aleksandra and Vadim cared. They called local housing authorities and told them about the barking dog sealed under the sidewalk. The local housing authorities simply shrugged. They refused to help. Stunned, Aleksandra and Vadim decided to take matters into their own hands and dig up the dog themselves.
Once they freed the dog, who was able to walk, wagging her tail and accepting head scratches from her rescuers, they named her Belka and noticed she was pregnant. Unfortunately, after she was taken to a shelter, she lost her puppies due to two days with no food and water. Belka, however, is recovering and may soon be up for adoption.
