“Power is the ability to do good things for others,” Brooke Astor once said. Mrs. Astor, who died in 2007 at age 105, was a great American philanthropist, renowned for her generosity and for practicing what she preached in this famously pithy quote: “Money is like manure; it should be spread around.”
An Aries, Astor loved dogs as much as she loved philanthropy. Sadly, her son treated his wealthy mother very poorly, stealing many of her prized possessions, including her favorite painting by Childe Hassam. But the ingrate didn’t take her staggering stash of dog-themed artwork and collectibles, so she was surrounded by happy canine energy long after her beloved Dachshunds, Boysie and Girlsie, had left her for the Rainbow Bridge.
Now, here’s good news for like-minded collectors: The contents of Astor’s estate, Holly Hill, will be auctioned at Sotheby’s on September 24 and 25. Connoisseurs of canine collectibles will be delighted by the items on offer, which include poodle portraits and porcelain pugs.
