In celebration of the year-end festive season, Dogster is casting a canine-focused eye back on the most notably lovable dogs that helped light up 2013. Each day we’ll be profiling one honorable hound. We’re tagging it “the 12 Dogs of Christmas.”

After featuring the dogs of the United Nations yesterday, today we have another rescue story with …

5. Chacha

The story of Chacha is a literal heart-warmer. Back in the frigid month of January, Cory Booker (who was then the mayor of Newark in New Jersey before becoming a senator) was alerted by Twitter to a dog that appeared to be either stuck or abandoned outside in the bitter cold. Springing to action, Booker himself decided to go and scoop up the pooch.

As we reported at the time, Booker spoke to the WABC news channel about the incident in terms that seem to suggest he’s a knowledgable dog lover. “This is brutal weather,” he said. “This dog is shaking really bad and you just can’t leave your dogs out here on a day like this and go away and expect them to be okay. Hypothermia on any animal including a human animal will set in pretty quickly. So this is very sad. You can just feel the dog shaking pretty badly.”

It turns out that Chacha also had puppies, which were similarly brought to safety. Although we haven’t heard from Chacha since, we’d like to hope that she’s safely snuggled up by a warm fireplace for this holiday season.
