You know the feeling: You spend half the night trying to figure about which movie to watch on On Demand, iTunes, Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Instant, that damn movie vending machine thing that glares at you every time you buy a Slurpee — whatever — and when you finally settle in and begin to enjoy your film (Beverly Hills Cop!), WHAMMO: The dog dies. Or the cat dies.

Why didn’t they tell you the dog died?

Now, they do. Or rather, a website does. A website that allows to you search movies and find out if any pets die in them. Genius? Of course. Accepting early investors for an IPO? Not just yet.

It’s called Does the Dog Die. It does one thing very well (tells you if the dog died). Sometimes the dogs do, sometimes they don’t. It all depends on the masochism of the director, really. So far, the site has 649 movies. The listings tell you not only whether any dogs, cats, or pets died (or were otherwise injured), but also a little about the circumstances of the deaths or injury.

It’s a great reference tool, and we think it’s best to be used after you check out the particular movie you might watch on Rotten Tomatoes but before you say screw it and see if America’s Funniest Home Videos is on (note: it’s always on).

And, it’s fun to browse around. Here are some movies I picked COMPLETELY AT RANDOM NOT THAT I THINK THEY ARE GREAT FILMS OR ANYTHING BUY MAYBE YOU CAN WATCH THEM TONIGHT?

***spoilers ahead!***

Here’s how the site describes itself:

“Do you turn off Old Yeller before the end so you can pretend that he lived a long and happy life? Did a cute pet on a movie poster make you think it would be a fun comedy but it turned out to be a pet-with-a-terminal-illness tearjerker instead? Are you unable to enjoy the human body count in a horror movie because you’re wondering whether the dog’s going to kick the bucket? Have you ever Googled ‘Does the [dog/cat/horse/Klingon targ] die in [movie title]?'”

We like this site. Check it out.
