In a heart-wrenching story of survival, an abused puppy arrived at the Lange Foundation, a rescue based in Los Angeles, with severe burns covering over 80 percent of her body. Her condition was dire and survival was slim. As anyone with burn injuries can attest, she was in excruciating pain. The rescue named her Firefly.
When Firefly arrived at the Lange Foundation, the staff was in tears. The questions everyone wanted answers to were: Who would do this to her … and why? Those questions remain unanswered to this day. Veterinarians theorized that something caustic was poured over her body causing chemical burns. Another thought that she was doused with gasoline and lit on fire. The depravity of the act showed the worst of human nature … but her rescue brought out the best.
Within two months of care, Firefly was close to fully healed. The little dog will always have scars, a reminder of what has happened to her, but she doesn’t seem to notice. Her outlook on life never wavered and she manages to wag her tail in the face of it all.
Three months after the incident, Firefly found a wonderful home. She now lives with Jeffrey who has renamed her B.E.S.S. after his three dogs who’d recently passed away. Jeffrey says his heart “just grows” at the sight of his new dog.
