As the East Coast endures Sandy’s stormy onslaught, humans are taking stock and hunkering down in their homes with supplies, food, and bottled water — and when it comes to planning for a natural disaster, it’s important to remember the needs of your four-legged family members.

A dog might not understand exactly what’s going on, but dogs can pick up on your emotions — and they react accordingly. In the face of imminent danger, our pets can also provide comic relief, delighting us with their naïveté and lightening the mood. They’re also great sources of comfort and support in times of need.

With Sandy, pet parents are heeding warnings and prepping their pooches for the storm. Adding some levity to the situation, Gothamist asked people to submit photos of their pets geared up for whatever may come their way. The result is a series of dogs in raincoats, with some pooches donning life vests, and one other canine cocking his head in confusion as if to say, “But whyyy do we have to spend all day inside?”

We hope our East Coast Dogster dogs and humans are somewhere safe and sound with their dogs.

Have any photos of your dogs prepped for the storm? Submit them to the slideshow below — we want to see them!
