When the two-month-old Pit Bull pup entered a shelter in California, we bet shelter workers shook their heads sadly and gave up on him before he even had a chance. Can we blame them? With so many animals competing for homes, when a Pit Bull comes in with disabled hind legs the prospects just look grim. He was scheduled to be euthanized.
That’s when a rescue called Good NewZ! Pittie Pups put out a call for help. All their fosters in the state were full, so they reached out as far as they could. That’s how they got ahold of the folks who would become Auggie the Pit Bull’s forever home. With a soft spot for Pit Bulls, and an especially tender place for disabled dogs, they made the trip from Idaho to San Francisco, California, where Auggie was in the temporary care of a foster family.
But Auggie’s troubles were far from over. With four other dogs to care for, Auggie’s family struggled to find a way to pay for the extensive medical evaluations Auggie would need in order to determine his specific condition and provide treatment — if possible. Fortunately, the community rallied around Auggie, and at four months, the dog has undergone surgery to remove two fluid-filled cysts and an exam has revealed that Auggie’s spinal cord is deformed. Hopefully, however, now that the cysts have been removed, Auggie’s nerves may develop functionality and maybe — just maybe — he might be able to walk again. Auggie’s human friends are hoping to train him to be a therapy dog for for kids.
