During the warmer months, puppies are overflowing from local shelters in Los Angeles, California. Baldwin Park Animal Shelter is no different. When an owner turned in a mother dog and her pups, all of them suffering from a parasitic skin condition, he knew their chances were slim. The owner decided to take home the mother and left the pups behind.

The pups were in a terrible state. There skin was infested with demodectic mange, a treatable skin condition if caught early, but deadly if untreated. Their hair had fallen away in clumps from furious itching. One pup who had suffered the worst was too far gone and was humanely euthanized. The other three pups could not be adopted. Not in this condition.

For many overcrowded and underfunded shelters, ongoing treatments for mange are costly. The future of these pups was grim. Fortunately, Baldwin Park has a small nonprofit fund and was able to provide the puppies their first round of treatment. After that, foster mom Candi Crawford stepped in to care for the remaining three pups in her home. The shelter was able to raise additional funds for treatment.

Three weeks later, Luci, Cora, and Fred are nearly recovered. Since the creation of the video below, all three pups have found loving homes. For Cora, who will need additional medical attention for hernias, she found the best home of all: with foster mom Candi.
