The stray, hurting Pit Bull was out of options. Things weren’t looking good. She was reduced to hiding in a bush in a park, terrified. She was starved, rail thin; her left eye was infected and inflamed, useless; a huge tumor sprouted from her ear. When someone finally spotted her and placed a call to animal control, it would almost certainly be just a quick few steps to the euthanasia table. Ruined Pit Bulls hiding in parks don’t have many friends.

But the person who did finally spot her, Sandy Mays, didn’t let it happen that way. She called dog lover Lauren Lopez, who called dog lover Lisa Chiarelli, who called up her friend, Eldad Hagar from Hope For Paws. Suddenly, the scared, hurt Pit Bill had an army on her side.

“Oftentimes people think there is little they can do when they see a stray in need,” says rescuer Annie Hart in an email to Dogster. “But this simply isn’t true, as Sandy Mays has proven. While she couldn’t save this precious Pit on her own, she chose to do something, anything, to help. She used her voice. She contacted friends, who contacted other friends, and so on; thus an effort to save Savannah began.”

Lauren, Sandy, and Lisa Arturo joined Eldad, and they headed out to save the Pit Bull. As you’ll see in the video, she is scared but accepts the kindness of the strangers. Eldad offers her food, gets a leash around her, picks her up, and brings her to his car, where she leans against the seat closes her eyes. They name the dog Savannah.

Once she was in recovery after surgery to remove the tumor and her eye, Savannah brightened, becoming the friendly, happy dog she is today. She’s now being fostered by Lauren, and Second Chance at Love Humane Society will facilitate the adoption, once candidates come forward. That’s where you can help. If you like this video, share it.
