In the days before Halloween, we find ourselves constantly telling people to go easy on putting your pets in costumes. It’s sobering stuff. Don’t we like to party? “At what point does it become cruel to dress up your dog for Halloween?” we ask. We’re so boring.

This, however, isn’t one of those stories. We’re doing to show you some pictures of dogs in costumes. Presumably they all like dressing up, because who would bring their dog out to something called Dog Walk of the Dead if he didn’t like dressing up? OK, maybe some people would do that. They should read this story about why dogs shouldn’t dress up for — wait, sorry, we weren’t going to do that.

Back to the puppy apocalypse: The zombie parade took place last weekend in Montclair, New Jersey — “behind the Lackawanna Plaza shopping center,” according to NJ.com — and was attended by several dozen zombies and their dogs. Why did they do that? To benefit the Montclair Township Animal Shelter. These are good people, despite death and zombie behavior, and all that.

“You can incorporate a zombie into anything that you’re into,” Anthony Muzikar, who launched the Dog Walk of the Dead with his wife last year, told NJ.com. “Whether you’re into sports, whether you’re into superheroes, anything can be dead. I think that really helps people with creativity. Anything can be incorporated because everything dies.”

He says he was inspired by New Jersey Zombie Walk in Asbury Park, where he would attend each year with his dog. He thought, “Why not do one just for people with dogs?” And so Dog Walk of the Dead was born.

The weather was bad, which he says affected the turnout, but he has big plans for the future of Dog Walk of the Dead.

“I want to bring the horror community into the pet community,” he said. “It’s almost like a horror convention meets a pet expo. That’s where we’re looking to take this. You’re bringing the two together because everybody loves horror and everybody loves their pets and everything spurs on raising money for the shelter.”
