Ask pet parents to share their greatest fears for a beloved dog. Cancer will be a common reply, as will having a pup go missing. But for those of us who regularly take our best friends out into the world, being attacked by another dog tops the list.
That scenario came true for one of our own this Labor Day weekend.
Dogster contributor Jeff Goldberg was walking Rocky — the Italian Greyhuahua-Jack Russell mix he and his wife, Susan, adopted back in 2011 — through their San Diego apartment complex when three large dogs attacked them.
After taking Rocky to the emergency vet, where he underwent multiple surgeries to close bite wounds on his ears, neck, and back, Jeff went to the human ER for treatment of the wounds he sustained protecting his pup — 11 in total on his arms, hands, chest, and legs.

The Goldberg family has received an outpouring of support since the attack, with friends, family, and coworkers sending prayers and healing vibes.

And we all cheered when Rocky was finally able to go home on Tuesday afternoon.

And we cheered again when he started eating again.
As for the dogs who attacked them, Jeff says that animal control officers are on the case.
Please join us in wishing Rocky and Jeff a speedy recovery! You can follow their progress on Jeff’s Facebook page.
