September 2020 — Animal Pain Awareness Month
The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management’s (IVAPM) Animal Pain Awareness Month, sponsored by Zoetis, raises awareness about osteoarthritis (OA) – a degenerative and progressively painful joint disease found in both dogs and cats – plus encourages pet parents and veterinarians to engage in conversation about this under-diagnosed condition. A Zoetis-sponsored survey conducted found that 74% of owners with OA-diagnosed dogs believed their pets had OA before the diagnosis, but only 16% had scheduled a veterinary examination to confirm their suspicions. However, 66% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners who were previously educated on the health implications of OA were more likely to consult with their veterinarian to have their pet evaluated and confirm the diagnosis.1 OA pain can be challenging to diagnose because dogs and cats often do not exhibit signs of pain in a clinical examination setting. Therefore, Zoetis created osteoarthritis checklists for dogs and cats to help pet owners identify activities and behaviors that may be signs of OA at home, where signs are most likely to be observed. Owners are encouraged to share the results with their veterinarian during their pet’s next wellness exam. For more information and resources, visit Rimadyl and www.TheNewScienceofOAPain.com.
