One of the many fun features of navigating the Twitterverse is the happy moment when a boldface name retweets (RTs) or otherwise acknowledges you. Dogster’s Twitter has 17,409 followers as of this writing (hopefully we’ve since picked up even more!), and among them are a few you may have heard of. T’wit: Mia Farrow.
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the actress, humanitarian, and devoted animal lover tweeted about Michael Leaverton’s Dogster story on Fiona Apple. Farrow’s tweet, which includes a callout to her diplomat son Ronan Farrow (whose Dad, Woody Allen, is not on Twitter), was retweeted no fewer than 71 times. It goes like this:
This heartbreaking, beautifully written letter by Fiona Apple caught me off guard. Sent to me by @ronanfarrow

Yet another of this esteemed site’s famous followers also follows 669,858 other Twitter users, among them Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, and Nancy Pelosi. Can you guess where this is heading? He’s none other than Barack Obama. And if you don’t believe us, check out this screen grab!
Here are a few of Dogster’s other intriguing, star-dusted followers, all very well worth following.
1. Pam Grier
I’m a native of New York City, where you’re supposed to simply shrug when a celebrity passes, but spot me a celeb and I’m just a wide-eyed tourist at heart. So when the legendary actress and icon RT’d my Dogster story about fighting canine cancer, I was so honored I about jumped out of my seat!
A dedicated animal activist, Ms. Grier has rescue dogs herself (and often describes the snugglesome scene at her home as “covered in doggies”); her Twitter feed reads like a veritable pet gazette of newsworthy items.
2. Sammy Hutton, aka Tim’s Dog
That reaction I described above? Double it for this one, and be still my heart: His name is Sammy, and he’s the dashing, tricolor canine companion of actor Tim Hutton, aka @timhutton, star of TV’s Leverage and mega-heartthrob of my ageless generation.
Sammy’s follow list is short, and includes such notables as Zach Galifianakis, David Lynch, and Julie Klam (see below).
3. Julie Klam
We’re fans of the bestselling author of You Had Me at Woof and Love at First Bark, so we’re thrilled to be followed by the witty, wonderful Julie Klam, one third — with Ann Leary and Laura Zigman — of the terrific Twitter trio who host the weekly NPR literary show Hash Hags.
4. Sidewalk Angels
The nonprofit, founded by recording artist Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and his wife, Marisol, tweets often about the doings at Pets Alive, an excellent animal shelter in upstate New York that’s another one of the couple’s pet causes.
5. Jackson Galaxy
By following Dogster, a site dedicated to dogs, Animal Planet’s Cat Daddy, aka Jackson Galaxy, owner of Spirit Essences (holistic remedies for animals), proves he’s equal op-paw-tunity. Woof!
6. Dr. Karen Becker
To her patients and clients, the Chicago-based integrative veterinarian is a rock star; her healing wisdom is widely available to pet lovers around the country and the world, thanks to her tweets, plus her expert presence on Dr. Joseph Mercola‘s site.
7. Bill Berloni
The go-to animal trainer for the Great White Way, William Berloni — Bill to his friends — has worked with some of the biggest stars in the celebrity firmament, from Sarah Jessica Parker to Bernadette Peters.
Currently on hand, and paw, behind the curtain at Broadway’s hit revival of the musical Annie, Bill tweets fun backstage gossip about (and pix of) his pawsome protege, Sandy the dog.
8. George Clooney
Well, sort of. This George is a very handsome … cat.
