Join the DWAA — the most recognized professional writing association devoted to dogs — perfect for artists, photographers, writers, poets, historians, bloggers or veterinarians. This year’s 2019 DWAA Awards Banquet takes place at the New Yorker Hotel in Manhattan. Keynote speakers are NBC’s Jill Rappaport and radio host/journalist (and sister publication Catster contributor) Steve Dale. Winners of the annual writing competition will be announced. Monday, February 11 through Tuesday, February 12: 143rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
It’s that time of year when all eyes — and paws — will be on Madison Square Garden for the 2019 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan. Competing for the first time are two breeds: the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje. This year’s Best In Show winner will be picked by legendary dog handler Peter J. Tuesday, February 12: Dogs & Puppies: A Memory Game
This fun, new matching game aims to reunite the puppies with their parents. Beautifully illustrated by Marcel George and written by Emma Aguado, the game include dogs and puppies of 25 breeds from around the world – from Siberian Huskies to Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Dachshunds to Dalmatians. Saturday, February 16: Paws4You Rescue Benefit Chopard Presents Diamonds are Forever Gala
Paws4You, a Miami-based, non-profit animal rescue organization, hosts its second annual, black-tie fundraising gala at 7:30 p.m. at the Coral Gables Country Club, 997 North Greenway Drive, Coral Gables, FL, 33134. The gala will raise funds for Paws4You Rescue in support of its mission to save dogs from euthanasia and combat displacement of pets with guidance and alternatives to surrender. The casino-themed fundraiser event will include poker, roulette and other Vegas-style games to raise money for the shelter. Well-known philanthropists and committed community members Paul and Suwanne DiMare are the honorees at this year’s gala. Dogs from Paws4You Rescue that are up for adoption will participate in the gathering and a custom signature Chopard dog bowl will be raffled off to one lucky guest. Monday, February 18: Return of American Rescue Dog Show
Back for a second installment, the Hallmark Channel’s new annual TV program returns, showcasing shelter dogs competing in such wagalicious categories as Best Wiggle Butt, Best Underbite and Best in Kissing. Saturday, February 23: National Dog Biscuit Day
Celebrate this canine holiday observance by whipping up some home-made dog biscuits for Fido like these peanut butter banana dog treats that can be cut into whatever holiday shape you want!
Sunday, February 24: Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Mardi Gras Parade
The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux, also known as “The Animal Krewe,” formed in Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana in 1999 with the purpose of hosting year-round fundraising activities to support regional spay and neuter programs, with the largest event being the annual Pet Parade. Held from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 2000 Reeves Marine Drive in Bossier City. Each year, thousands of costumed pets and their owners gather to compete in costume contests and walk in a giant pet parade. The theme of the 2019 Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Pet Parade is “Steampunk Pups and Futuristic Felines.” Admission is $1 for adults and free for children; the cost to register a pet for the parade is $25 per pet. Parade day activities, including the judging of registered pets for prizes in such categories as “Best Dressed,” “Best Float,” “Best Interpretation of Theme” and “Pet/Owner Lookalike,” will begin at 1 p.m. The parade typically marches at 3 p.m. Click here for complete parade information and online pet registration.

How could you skip the world’s largest costumed pet parade? Mostly dogs, but other species join in the fun, the Purina Pet Parade – followed by the Wiener Dog Derby – in St. Louis is part of the city’s Mardi Gras festivities. 2019 is this parade’s 25th anniversary.
