Being married to a firefighter got Denver designer Lori Holliday thinking about firehoses, and what happens when hundreds of yards of perfectly serviceable, industrial-strength material gets retired from duty at the engine company.

So Lori developed a collection of products made from decommissioned fire hoses, including belts and wallets. She called the collection Gallo en Fuego (that’s Spanish for “rooster on fire,” for those who, unlike my dog Lazarus, haven’t yet mastered Spanish).

And, being a dog lover, she couldn’t resist adding a canine collar and leash to her product line. That’s the Hollidays’ own Lab mix Jackson modeling the Gallo en Fuego collar and leash, which comes in rooster-red to help make black doggies like Jackson easier to spot at a distance.

Most of the hoses saw active duty in a city that profoundly appreciates firefighters’ everyday heroism: New York. The material is thoroughly cleaned prior to being refashioned as Gallo en Fuego “gear with a past.”

What’s more, the company donates a portion of proceeds from every sale to the National Fallen Firefighters Association, whose mission is to remember America’s fallen heroes and assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives.
