Haiku by Dog: It’s Snow Time!

With record-breaking amounts of snow blanketing many parts of the U.S., it can be a bit of a challenge figuring out how to go about the business of being a dog. Yet, like anyone who lives in a place where snow happens, the pups of Haiku by Dog have adapted to life with the white stuff. Besides, if you don’t have to shovel it or drive in it, snow is fun!

Often, the most difficult challenge facing the dogs is where — and how — to go. It’s kind of hard to lift a leg and do your thing when the snow is higher than your ability to lift. Tucker ponders this issue.

Squirrels — those taunting, teasing creatures of the trees — weigh less than a pound, so they can leap on top of the snow. Shallow footprints tell the tale of their light-footed journeys, while heavier dogs have to slog through the depths. But that won’t stop Jasper, Lilah, and Tucker from pursuing them.

A favorite winter pastime is the chasing — and chewing — of sticks. Half the fun of the game is to steal the other dog’s stick because he always has the Best One and it belongs to you. But when snow covers the ground, branches can be hard to find. You have to be resourceful. Like Lilah.

Spring will be here soon, melting the snow, uncovering the sticks, and bringing with it the joy of mud. Until then, it’s Snow Time.

How do your dogs handle deep snow? Tell us in the comments or ask your pooch to write a haiku about it.
