The elite team of Navy Seals involved in the death of the most hunted man in the world was made up of 79 commandos and one dog, according to the New York Times.

The explosive-sniffing dog was lowered from one of the three Black Hawk helicopters into Osama bin Laden’s hideout in the town of Abbottabad, Pakistan, The Sun reports.

As of yet, no details have been released about the dog or his/her role in the operation. But this is probably one of the most highly trained military dogs in the world, and I hope that as the story unfolds, we learn more about him/her. I’ll keep you posted.

Update May 5: I contacted the Department of Defense yesterday to see if someone could talk to me about the dog (can’t hurt to ask!) and got a polite response back this morning that “Unfortunately, we cannot offer any operational details of the mission for you.” I’m in good company. The New York Times is out with an interesting article in its Science section, speculating about the breed and role of the dog. Everyone wants to know, and when and if the dog’s story ever comes out, we’ll be sure to bring it to you right here on the Dog Blog.
