When she’s not wrangling copy, CHOW Assistant Managing Editor Deborah Lewis stars in video clips for the site, sharing tips for foodies on matters such as peeling a potato with your bare hands and creating a brownie in a cup using a microwave.

Recently, Deborah’s CHOW Tips fell into Dogster territory, with the editor sharing a favorite salmon dog treat recipe (crafted by veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward) from an old issue of Fetch magazine.

“I like his recipe because it’s easy, cheap, and simple,” she says, before cautioning that you may want to open a window before getting busy — these salmon treats are like dog crack, in no small part to the odor that comes with them.

Deborah’s dog, Lola, is a big fan, and she co-stars in the clip (you have to hit play just to see how cutely she begs for these things):

How to Make Dr. Ward’s Salmon Dog Treats

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 7-ounce can of salmon
  • 1/2 cup oat or quinoa flour
  • 1 tablespoon minced parsley

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. In a medium-size bowl, mix everything until well blended.

2. Roll the mixture into 1/2-inch balls and place on a nonstick cooking sheet.

3. Bake 12-15 minutes.

(Yield: 36 treats at 10 calories each)

Note: While the recipe calls for baking for as long as 15 minutes, Deborah recommends baking them for as long as 40 minutes instead. This “makes them extra crispy, and I think that extends their shelf life,” she says.

Ward also has this footnote on the recipe: If you don’t have oat flour, blend dry oats in a food processor. Substitute quinoa or amaranth if oats aren’t available.
