A study published in January 2019 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association showed 1 in 6 veterinarians have considered suicide, and 1 in 10 experience severe psychological distress.

To address this crisis, Banfield Pet Hospital announced a new training program called ASK (Assess, Support, Know), designed specifically to help veterinarians combat emotional distress and suicidal thoughts, both for themselves and others.

Additionally, Banfield plans to block out schedules at all 1,000-plus Banfield hospitals nationwide for two hours for mental health and well-being training, and make its ASK training program available free of charge to all veterinarians and U.S. veterinary colleges.

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741.

  2. Worked for them for 3 years. Almost left the profession because of the horrible working conditions, undertrained staff, severely short staffed, all about the numbers. Worked every Saturday and every other Sunday for 3 years! Clinic open 365 days a year, not even closed on Christmas. This corporation is horrible and they’ve got a very long way to go to be considered humane. So glad I didn’t drink the Kool aid.

  3. No they are not
I needed help when I became homeless in Seattle.

It all became too much for me and I moved into my moms

    I was not with them for 12 months so i didn’t matter…..

  4. Except the “training” is more or less related back onto how to interact with clients. Banfield has awful aka zero mental health coverage in their insurance, and push numbers over individual clinic needs, causing their staff to be under staffed and over worked. But also completely managing to cut hospital hours so employees are feeling the burden of not getting enough hours.
