These days, people in Brooklyn are generally young and spirited, and when confronted with something like a dog costume contest, they don’t phone it in by browsing PetSmart. They pull out the sewing machines, they swing open the craft closets, they mix up a cocktail, they get to work. And good for them, because that made the 16th Annual Great PUPkin dog costume at Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park this weekend a wonder to behold.
We had a selfie dog, a Jeff Koons balloon dog, Run DMC, Hedwig, a paper shredder, Ghostbuster‘s Slimer, a cookie dog, a Pope dog, and a Shih-Tzu in a toilet bowl — all great costumes that make us glad that Brooklyn exists in the particular way it does.
But the best costume by far (our apologies to Pope Puggle) was Ira Glass dog, with his rumpled suit and fur, eyeglasses, desk microphone, and coffee cup. The host seemed knee-deep in his This American Life radio show, gazing upon the assorted crowd as if he were doing a story on the costume contest rather than winning it (which he did).
