Frenchies have been a bit of a hipster darling for a while now, but their iconic smoosh faces and bat ears appear to be a having a mainstream moment.
I qualify that statement thusly: Over the weekend, I walked into Madewell and encountered the cute accessories below. Brass Frenchie studs ($18), rings ($20) and necklaces ($32) were on display next to similar items featuring the already mainstream-ified jackalopes and cats.
Convinced this was a one-off, I left the shop plotting to return and pick up the earrings for the bully breed nuts on my Christmas list. But then I arrived home to a J.Crew catalog in the mail and found a Frenchie sweater (!!) staring me in the face on page 39.
I stormed the J.Crew website and found nothing. Surely the Frenchies didn’t sell out overnight! I left a perplexed note on the shop’s facebook wall, and tweeted this in frustration.
The next day, J.Crew got back to me and said the sweater had yet to hit the website. “Happy to let you know the Frenchie sweater will debut in our November collection tomorrow,” wrote one of its social media minions.
And behold, they didn’t lie:
The illustration was inspired by a J.Crew designer’s pup named Knuckles. We think he looks darling adorning this angora-blend top (which retails for $98, 20 percent off if you get the catalog).
I can already think of three ladies at the office who are going to flip for this.
