J.J. Fuds has expanded a recall of its frozen raw pet food due to both listeria and salmonella fears. In late January, the Valparaiso, Indiana, company recalled its J.J. Fuds Chicken Tender Chunks due to the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Now, the recall also includes its Beef Tender Chunks and Duckling Tender Chunks, and the warning also notes the the risk of salmonella.
The recall has also expanded to cover all lot code dates of the products and additional bag sizes.
The recalled poultry and beef products were distributed regionally in five states — Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois — to wholesale and retail customers.

The recall was a result of a routine sampling program by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which resulted in a positive test for listeria monocytogenes and salmonella. The company says it has not received any reports of dogs experiencing nausea and diarrhea from the products, nor has it received any reports of human illness. J.J. Fuds says it is working with distributors and retailers to dispose of any product remaining in store freezers, as well as with pet owners who have already purchased the product.
According to the company, listeria monocytogenes can “cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail, or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Animals ill with listeria will display symptoms similar to the ones listed above for humans.”
Pets with salmonella infections “may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
