Transformers hottie and Fergie’s hubby Josh Duhamel has added his voice to the battle cry of shelter pet adoption awareness.
The heartthrob action star, who rescued a Dachshund named Meatloaf, recently teamed up with PetSmart Charities to help spread the word about the benefits of adopting a furry friend from a local shelter. His efforts include deeply personal and candid pieces for The Huffington Post and People Magazine.
Duhamel’s adoption story began seven years ago, when he and Fergie were searching for a companion for their dog, Zoe, and stumbled upon Meatloaf through a rescue organization. They brought Meatloaf home, and it was love at first sniff. While Meatloaf has since passed, Duhamel carries on his memory by bringing attention to the pet overpopulation problem and encouraging people to adopt from shelters rather than purchase a puppy.
The PetSmart Charities’ High-Five for Pet Adoption campaign celebrates the 5 million pets whose lives have been changed for the better by finding new furever homes. While that’s an impressive number, there are still more pets who need families — pets like Meatloaf who are ready for a second chance.
And the gift of adoption is one that keeps on giving! Just ask Duhamel, who told People that Meatloaf “was the most lovable, appreciative, soulful little dude. He just turned out to be such a great pet, such a great friend, and ever since then I’ve been an advocate of rescuing.”
