A man who allegedly threw his wife’s Chihuahua puppy hard enough to kill the pup is facing a possible life sentence. It’s not that the law has any more teeth than usual. It’s that California’s “three strikes” law may come into play.

Bud Wally Ruiz already has four convictions for assualt with a deadly weapon. (Seems like his three strikes already happened.) This one might push him over the brink and into the clink for good.

The Gilroy, Calif. man was charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty after he allegedly hurled the 6-week-old pup across a room during an argument, according to SFGate.com. The pup, who was in a bag at the time, hit the wall and died. The tiny dog had been a Mother’s Day gift for his wife, Marcella Ruiz. She has come to her husband’s defense, saying he didn’t mean to hurt the pup.
