Ricky Young was driving down the Houston Eastex Freeway in the morning last Friday, listening to the Buzz on 94.5 FM, when an alert came over the airway.
“It said ‘caution for a dog on the HOV lane,'” he told KHOU.
And suddenly, there the dog was, a yellow Lab, lying down in the HOV (stands for high-occupancy vehicles) lane up ahead. Instantly, young knew he had to help.
“I’m just kind of a softy on that stuff,” he told KHOU. “I have a dog and would hate to see him on a highway like that.”
Young pulled his truck over on the shoulder, next to the HOV lane, and climbed out. The dog looked terrified — she was clearly injured. He climbed over the wall and figured out a plan.
“Obviously we were all scared,” he said.
He tried to coax the dog to him, but she wasn’t having it. When she got up to hobble away, Young stopped advancing and went back to his truck. He wasn’t going to chase an injured dog around the freeway. She was going to come to him.
He got out his sandwich for a lure. It worked. The dog took the bait and headed over to Young, who got her safely into his truck.
“I could see that she was thankful and she was happy to be in a safer environment,” he said.
Young drove directly to the Houston SPCA, where a vet discovered broken bones and internal bleeding; the dog underwent surgery that same day. The vet says Young got to her in the nick of time, and she was in desperate need of care.
The dog has no microchip or collar. She is expected to make a full recovery.
