It’s been some time since we’ve talked about Miley Cyrus, but big things have been happening. BIG THINGS.
In our previous coverage, you’ll remember that one of her many rescue dogs, a Yorkie, was killed by her Bulldog, and then her Alaskan Klee Kai Floyd died this spring, and then she sang to a 60-foot Floyd with glowing eyes on stage, and then a writer in the UK said we shouldn’t care when dogs die because they’re dogs, and then Miley gave away the replacement puppy her mom gave her a few days after Floyd’s passing, which was probably a smart move. Through it all, Miley made global news for the way she mourned Floyd, pouring out her heart in wobbly sentences on Twitter and crying onstage. Somewhere along the way she got the flu and stuck out her tongue and made a drug reference, but we did not cover those things.
That was all back in April. This is July. Our summer Miley coverage begins with this headline: Miley got a new dog!
“This is a new beginning,” she writes on Instagram.

On Sunday, she broke the news about Emu Coyne Cyrus on Instagram with photos of the dog and a long post. Savvy music fans will note that “Coyne” refers to Wayne Coyne, the singer of the Flaming Lips, and “Emu” refers to the animal, which is found in zoos.
Here is her post in full. Imagine a bunch of emoticons scattered throughout, because they were; also, imagine this is a song that Miley is singing to a stuffed dog onstage, because she does that sort of thing. Imagine this is a song called, “I Feel a Change Coming On.” (All grammar the author’s.)

“It’s taken some time to be ready for this next step and loving again. / There will never be anyone like Floyd. / There was a bond that was so deep it’s irreplaceable / but that’s not what I am trying to do.”
“Never will I replace Floyd / and that’s something I had to take time to understand. / we had a very special memorial service for Floyd / and I felt my angel Floydy give Emu his blessing. / I prayed to Floyd to just give him a touch of his awesomeness / and he has.”
