At a feisty 4-foot-11, I am often accused of having a Napoleon complex. People tell me that they never notice how petite I am because of my “large personality.” The point is that my height — or lack of it — rarely occurs to me (except for when I’m buying pants, perhaps), and my attitude is inversely proportional to my size.
While I’m a fan of big dogs, I sympathize with little dogs who might weigh only 10 pounds but are probably some of the most devoted guard dogs you’ll meet, barking at anything and everything that could pose a threat. It’s the Chihuahua who has the heart of a Great Dane, the Corgi who has the courage of a Rottweiler, and the Dachshund who has the spirt of an Akita … little guys who prove that when it comes to devotion and loyalty, size means nothing!
The Carmichael Collective celebrated last week’s birthday of one of history’s most notoriously ambitious short men, Napoleon Bonaparte (born Aug. 15, 1769), by paying homage with dogs dressed up like the French military leader.
Just the other day I was walking around my neighborhood when I spotted a fellow with two large, graceful, full-size Greyhounds and one little Pug. As they crossed the street, a car stopped a bit too close to the limit line, which frightened the Greyhounds into tail-tucked timidity. The Pug, however, had his hackles raised, barking and barking and barking at the car monster. It was quite a comical scene, and I admired the little dog’s bravery.
How many of our Dogster readers house a little Napoleon?
