This is crazy.
Natura Pet Products has just announced its fourth product recall in as many months.
The recall has moved fully into the treat segment of the company’s offerings, which somehow escaped the giant recall of dry dog food last time.
This recall involves ALL lot codes and ALL package sizes of the following products, affecting ALL expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014:
- Innova Dry dog and cat food and biscuits/bars/treats
- EVO dry dog, cat and ferret food and biscuits/bars/treats
- California Natural dry dog and cat foods and biscuits/bars/treats
- Healthwise dry dog and cat foods
- Karma dry dog foods
- Mother Nature biscuits/bars/treats
If you have any of these products, get rid of them (then get a product replacement or refund by calling Natura toll-free at 800-224-6123). If you have something that’s not on this list, just wait an hour — sorry, bad joke. We should not be joking when the company who makes Innova, EVO, California Natural, Healthwaise, Karma, and Mother Nature has had four recalls in four months.
How did this happen? The company blames “a single positive Salmonella test by the FDA on product manufactured April 3,” and it says it is acting out of an abundance of caution: “Normally, this would have resulted in retrieval of product manufactured over just a few days. However, we are taking the additional precautionary measure to recall all products in the marketplace. Our first priority is the well-being of the pets we serve.”
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
