Dog Saves Lucky Owner From Coyotes

Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007 – RUSHVILLE, Ohio — A lucky Fairfield County dog owner experienced firsthand the old saying that a dog can be a man or a woman’s best friend.

Kate Mayer said her Anatolian Shepherd saved her life from two coyotes that attacked her in a Rushville field, NBC 4 reported.

According to Mayer, the two coyotes used a board propped against a fence to leap into her field of alpacas. Mayer said she was in the field and she screamed when the coyotes came after her.

She said that was when her dog Amir came running.

Mayer’s partner said that the dog’s natural instincts are what saved Mayer that day.

“What these dogs instinctively do is separate threat from what they are protecting,” he said. “The idea of him coming at this thing at full speed and that short distance, turning sideways and literally lifting that other animal up and sending it in and across the pasture by blocking it.”

Mayer used a rake to knock the coyotes off the dog. Amir suffered torn muscles, broken teeth and a cut before he chased both coyotes away.
