We now know that Cristobal Colon — aka Christopher Columbus — grosslymisused dogs, using them to attack and terrorize the native peoples of the NewWorld(read more about thosebrutal chapters of history here).
Nonetheless, today isour national holiday honoring Columbus. So, if you live in or near Tucson, Arizona — or you’re traveling in the vicinity — there couldn’t be a better time to visit a dog park named for the famous explorer. It’s a lovely oasis where dogs may rompand play off-leash.
Located at 4600 N. Silverbell, on a third of an acrejust south of the intersection with West El Camino Del Cerro (and just west of I-10 at El Camino Del Cerro),Christopher Columbus Dog Park was the first — and remains the largest — off-leash area in Tucson, which is home to six dog parks.
The 14,000-square-foot fenced facility features Fido fountains, a scrambling area, separate areas for large and small dogs, a shaded area with ramadafor when you and Spot need to seekshelter from the blazing Arizona sun,an obstacle course for agility showoffs (like the cutie in the photo at right), a scooper dispenser, and lights for after-dark play (the park is open daily at dawn, and stays open two hourspast dusk).
After Spot is done romping off-leash, locals recommend taking an on-leashwalk around the lake.
