Ready for a cute history lesson? Back in the 1890s (thats way, way, way before the Internet and email), the U.S. Postal Service adopted a mutt pup found in Albany, NY. They named the dog Owney and he became the unofficial mascot of the USPS. Owney got to travel among postcards, letters, and mailbags. Owney traveled not only across the United States but internationally as well, visiting countries like Japan, China, and Singapore.
Owney was even once detained in Montreal for traveling without a doggie passport!
Owney continued his adventures until 1897, when he died and his human friends had him preserved. He is now on display at the Postal Museum in Washington, D.C., where he continues to delight imaginations.
Owney captured the imaginations of collaborators David Montgomery and Marcelo Vital, who have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a beautiful Owney graphic novel called The Secret Around-the-World Adventures of Owney The Postal Dog.
