Photographer Zachary Rose says Petheadz started as an “exercise in creativity” with his roommates.

They do say that pets and their people begin to resemble each other, so Rose decided to take it to the next level with Petheadz. The concept: Merge pets and their human friends into one. The process: Photograph pets, then use the LCD screen of a digital camera to mash up human and animal.

The result is not only a comment on the bond between humans and dogs, but a comment on the modern photographic process, which allows us to enjoy our images instantly. The “photos within photos” defy portrait conventions, creating an image that’s unique to our current place in technology.

This dog photography enthusiast finds Rose’s Petheadz engaging and entertaining — the final image is not aways a seamless integration, but few things in life are perfect, which makes Rose’s photos accurate representations of our relationship with not only dogs, but the world around us.

Rose’s little exercise has become a highly sought-after series — Rose has taken nearly 20 Petheadz photos all over Toronto, and has a lengthy wait list of portraits to complete for his ongoing project.

Check out Rose’s website and Instagram, and if you’re feeling particularly creative, try taking your own pet-head portrait, then upload it to Instagram tagged with #Petheadz for inclusion in this fun photo meme.
