It’s that time of year, again. According to Time Magazine, the American Kennel Club recently added two new breeds to its registry: the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno and the Chinook.
“The AKC is thrilled to add these lively and energetic breeds to the registry, giving dog lovers even more breeds to choose from,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “Both breeds are very athletic and will make great companions for those who love to stay active.”
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is joining the hound group, while the Chinook will become a part of the working group.
The Chinook is the official state dog of New Hampshire, and is most commonly owned in New England. They are popularly known as a rare breed of sled dog. They have a tawny coat and weigh around 70 pounds.
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is the tiniest of the Portuguese Podengo breed, hence “pequeno,” which translates to “small.” They are known to have smooth or wire-haired coats and bony, upright ears.
In addition, the Lagotto Romangnolo and Berger Picard joined the AKC in the miscellaneous class. In total, the AKC has 177 breeds in membership these days.
