When adorable Chihuahua puppy Peggy Leg was born without a rear paw, things looked bleak for the homeless doggie.
Staff at the Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue of New Mexico planned to fit the little one with a prosthetic leg in order to give her mobility. However, upon learning that North Carolina State University in Raleigh was looking for a small dog to test a titanium implant on, Enchantment Chihuahua knew they had to contact the school. The university agreed to outfit Peggy Leg with her bionic appendage for free, and now all Enchantment Chihuahua has to do is raise money for the pup’s travel expenses.
The procedure will make Peggy Leg the world’s smallest bionic pet, and it will help pave the way for other dogs — and humans — to receive mobility-granting bionic implants. It’s literally one small step for Peggy Leg, one giant leap for human- and dogkind.
Peggy Leg isn’t the world’s first prosthetic-fitted pet. That honor belongs to Mitzi, a German Shepherd in Europe who, after her front leg was trampled by a horse, received a prosthetic ankle and continued to walk.
The future is now! Now all Peggy Leg needs is a forever home … but we’ve got a feeling that will follow quickly.
