This is the story of Roo, a Pit Bull whose resilient spirit shines through the darkness of her horrifying dogfighting ordeal.

In August of last year, authorities in Clarkston, Georgia, visited a home in order to serve an arrest warrant in relation to a multistate dogfighting bust. While they did not find their suspects, they did stumble upon the dogfighting evidence: Several dogs with scarring and injuries specific to the vile practice. One dog was in particularly poor condition. That dog was Roo.

With her face covered in scars, half of one front leg entirely missing, and half of her other front leg bent out of shape, Roo needed help — and fast. However, because of Roo’s unique position as “evidence” for the crime, her rescue had to be coordinated with the county and Friends of Dekalb Animals, the rescue organization who would see to her recovery. Ordinarily, a dog who is evidence would have to remain in a county shelter, but Friends of Dekalb Animals advocated to have her released to a foster, so she could at least heal in the comfort of a home.

Her bent leg has been corrected through surgery, which allowed vets to address her other leg. After a failed skin graft, Roo’s family decided to amputate it altogether. However, even on just three legs, Roo manages to stand strong. She will remain in foster care until her case is over, and once that’s behind her, it’s all happily ever after for Roo.
