Like the vast majority of the free world that has ready access to the Internet, I love cute puppy pictures. In them, the promise and potential of youth is forever captured, its essence preserved and distilled. It’s important to keep in mind, though, especially with representatives of large and challenging dog breeds like Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies, that the purpose of puppy pictures is aesthetic appreciation.

Owning and living with any dog is a full-time gig and a major commitment, and never one to be entered into lightly. Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy pictures are awesome and adorable, but do not confuse our regular puppy-picture series as endorsing or encouraging anyone to go out and adopt one. Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are out there in the world, but so are tons of other dogs of all ages, each of whom need loving and nurturing homes.

A brief history of Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies

Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are fascinating for a host of reasons, including their origins as among the first designer dogs. The antecedents of Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies were practical hunting dogs who worked alongside aboriginal peoples of Southern Africa.

As European colonists began to occupy these areas, they also co-opted these tough and hardy local dogs, breeding them with their own dogs to produce Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies. Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies were bred for their talents and skills in hunting for the less practical uses of big-game hunters seeking to gain an advantage over lions.

It may seem counterintuitive to refer to Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies as designer dogs, but the trademark ridge of hair that lines their back has become a source of troubling controversy. Not all Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies have this distinguishing trait, which is the product of a genetic anomaly. In recent years, ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies have faced extreme prejudice from breeders less concerned with quality of life than with aesthetics.

Family time with Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies

While Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are still trained as hunting dogs, they are also steadfast friends and loyal to their families. Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are not your garden-variety pups, though, and owning one requires a commitment to training. Every puppy owner can tell you stories about the wild energy of young dogs, but Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies need particular focus and dedication to curb and structure the recklessness of youth.

Of course, it’s not all obedience classes and individual training exercsies. Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are also your typical baby puppies: curious, loyal, and affectionate. Here’s a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy playing with mom at a lovely picnic out in the yard! Feel the love!

Playing about on netted trampolines with the family and pawing at mom’s nose are entertaining and adorable images to consume, but it’s all a lot of energy for Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies to expend. Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are high-energy, high-maintenance dogs, to be sure, and this puppy is at the end of his tether for the afternoon. Time for a nap while mom enjoys the respite!

A little me-time for Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies

When time with the family becomes a bit much — as it can for the best of us — Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies appreciate some reflective moments to themselves. This Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, Kobi, is still tuckered out from adventuring with his owner, and is enjoying a deep, satisfying sleep.

Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies are active little creatures, in both body and mind, and our next two cute puppy pictures show baby puppies ruminating over and processing the many new experiences they’ve had. This Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy was lost in thought when his owner came over to visit with the camera.

Positive and consistent training works best for Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies. Note the concentration, furrowed brow, and intense focus on the face of this Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy as he surveys his domain. You might go and fetch young Waylon here a chew toy so he doesn’t have to gnaw at a piece of wiregrass.

The indomitable spirit of Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies

Rest and reflection are all very good and well, but let’s take these Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies back to their roots as hunters and guardians for our last two cute puppy pictures! Big-game hunting was one of the original purposes for the development of the Rhodesian Ridgeback in darker, less civilized times. Unseemly as that is, this Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy can easily live out his fantasies of adventure and excitement with a zebra squeak toy!

One truly heartwarming story involving Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies has been the tale of Raina and Ruuxa at the San Diego Safari Park. Raina, a baby Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, befriended Ruuxa, an abandoned cheetah. This caused the Internet to emit a collective squeal of glee, and for very good reason. This interspecies friendship between a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy and a cheetah cub shows us that we can find love and companionship in the least likely places.

Thankfully, safaris in Africa these days are mostly touristy photo-adventures, and, here in the states, limited to the safety and security of suburban San Diego. Share your stories and photos of domestic adventures with Rhodesian Ridgebacks in the comments below!
