The 12 Dogs of Christmas: Roo, Tripod Pit Bull Who Escaped Dog Fighting

Roo was rescued from a dog-fighting ring and has had serious issues with her legs, but the future is looking bright.

With the holiday season upon us and the year winding down, we’re casting a look back at the most notable, newsworthy, and lovable dogs we wrote about on Dogster in 2014. It’s a little tribute we like to call the 12 Dogs of Christmas — and today we reacquaint ourselves with the plight of a Pit Bull who was rescued from a dog-fighting ring.

3. Roo

Roo is a Pit Bull who was rescued as part of a raid on a dog-fighting ring in Clarkston, Georgia, last year. She was found in a horrific state: Her amiable face was littered with battle scars, while one of her front legs was bent and twisted at an eerie angle, and half of her other foreleg was missing.

As we reported in May of this year, Roo was rushed to hospital for treatment, but the technical details of her legal status came into play. Being that she was part of an ongoing investigation, she was considered evidence — which usually means a dog is held by the county shelter.

Thankfully, because of her need for love and help, the Friends of Dekalb Animals organization intervened and brokered a compromise whereby Roo could stay in a foster situation.

Since then, Roo has been undergoing more treatment for her injuries. One of her legs was amputated — although Facebook updates from July of this year suggest that there might have been an issue with the procedure and a subsequent metal plate had to be removed as the screws were loose.

In September, Roo received a splint to further assist with her recovery to a greater state of mobility. This should soon be updated to a more permanent brace — and hopefully help signal the beginning of a happier time for Roo.

“It’s been a crazy year, but probably the best she’s ever had despite surgeries and obstacles she had to overcome,” wrote her foster mum on her new Facebook page, summing up Roo’s 2014. “Let’s hope this next year can be surgery free and her abusers will be brought to justice.”
