The story of Scooter Puff Jr. begins on a tragic note but soon transforms into an upbeat tale of triumph. The dinky darling was found in an animal shelter in South Carolina suffering from a broken back. But thanks to the Animal Protection Society of Person County in neighboring North Carolina, he found a forever home over in Virginia.
Now Scooter is enjoying life as a “public figure,” as he bills himself, zipping around in his bespoke set of wheels and attending charity functions to spread the word about other animals in distress.

A key part of Scooter’s rehabilitation was the invention of what he calls “a spiffy set of wheels.” Here’s the contraption up close. (Note the sporty “2 Fast 4U” number plate.)
With his wheels intact, Scooter now fulfills what he sees as his life’s mission: “I like go wheel about town and let people know that special-needs dogs are just as awesome as our regular canine counterparts!”
Other pertinent information about this roving pup that you should know: Scooter is a diehard Potomac Nationals fanatic. Here he is below meeting the mascot of the team. In his enthusiastic brogue, Scooter described his new pal as, “Very big and very blue!”
Scooter is something of a whiz at track meets — or at least when it comes to the dressing up part. At the Running of the Chihuahuas festival, Scooter took first place. “Thank you to everyone that cheered for me,” he said. “I’m humbled.”
Scooter is also a voracious social animal. Here he is out and about greeting another local canine and engaging in a sniff session-turned-pooch powwow.
