Finally! The weather is turning a little bit cooler and your dog can join you outside without getting heatstroke. Take advantage of the better temperatures to take your dog on an excursion. Or, looking for inside fun? September is full of dog exhibits in great museums. Try out these fun September 2017 dog events:
Friday, September 1 — Sunday, September 24: Canine Impressions: Dog Show Scenes II

Don’t miss artist Terry d. Chacon’s Canine Impressions: Dog Show Scenes II exhibit at the AKC’s Museum of the Dog. Painting dog show scenes since 2004, the artist has also bred top-winning Afghan Hounds for more than 40 years, and they’ve inspired both her paintings and sculptures.
Tuesday, September 5 — Monday, January 8, 2018: On the Prowl: Cats and Dogs in French Prints

Looking for some canine culture? Don’t miss the On the Prowl: Cats and Dogs in French Prints exhibit beginning today at the Zimmerli Art Museum. This distinguished university-based museum is at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Also showing: the companion exhibit Cats vs Dogs: Illustrations for Children’s Literature. Tuesday, September 5 — Saturday, October 28: Exhibit Based on Being Human
In October, Chronicle Books is coming out with its new book, William Wegman: Being Human, which showcases more than 300 of Wegman’s dog photos spanning five decades of work. Saturday, September 9: Anthony Rubio Designs’ Women’s Wear & Canine Couture Runway
This is a dog lovers can’t-miss event during New York Fashion Week. Designer Anthony Rubio will be showcasing his Spring/Sumer 2018 Canine Couture, Women’s Wear collection “Where the Humans Are the Accessories.” Event held at 7 pm at the Angel Orensanz Center, 172 Norfolk Street (lower East Side of Manhattan) in New York, NY 10002. Sunday, September 10: The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon
The Helen Woodward Animal Center is holding its 12th annual surf dog competition and fundraiser, presented by Blue Buffalo. Dogs can surf on the same board as their friends or favorite humans. Check out up to 80 surfing dogs, along with live music, drawings for prizes and more than 40 vendors. Celebrity judging by prof surfer Shelby Detmers and The Bachelor‘s Ben Zorn. If your dog isn’t in to surfing, you can still enter him into the dog agility course or the costume contest. Event held at Del Mar Dog Beach in Del Mar, California. Thursday, September 14 — Sunday, September 17: Eukanuba Performance Games
Check out dock diving, scent work, agility and more at the first-ever Eukanuba Performance Games held at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio. The games last for four days, with six different events and 25 titles on the line. Plus, U.S. Army veteran and country music star Craig Morgan will be there on September 16th. Saturday, September 16: 7th Annual American Humane Association Hero Dogs Awards
Seven dogs will be named Hero Dogs by the American Humane Association for their work in therapy, the military, search and rescue, hearing and guide service, arson detection, service and law enforcement. Taking place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the event will be hosted by Beth Stern and James Denton, plus there will be additional celebrity presenters. Featured musical performance will be by Richard Marx. For ticket or event information, go to herodogawards.org. You can also see the event later this fall on the Hallmark Channel.
Tuesday, September 19: Bigsby’s Folly Craft Winery & Restaurant
Bigsby’s Folly Craft Winery & Restaurant is hosting a Yappy Hour, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the Morris Animal Foundation, which funds studies around the world to improve the health and well-being of animals. Join the fun — there will be goodie bags from Chuck & Don’s Pet Supply, drink specials and giveaways from Tito’s Vodka, pet information booths, games, prizes and more! Plus, they’ll be raffling off a basket full of items from Kong. It all takes place at Denver, Colorado’s Bigsby’s Folly Craft Winery & Restaurant located at 3563 Wazee Street in the Art District. To get to the winery on the RTD Light Rail, take the A-Train to Blake Street Station and the pedestrian bridge over the tracks to Wazee Street.
Friday, September 22: Dallas Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs Calendar Launch
Have some fun and raise money for dogs too at the Deep Ellum Brewing Company in Dallas, Texas. Meet the Dallas Heartthrobs from Dallas DogRRR‘s 2018 Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs calendar. There will be a raffle, prizes, beer and a photo booth to pose with your favorite Heartthrob.
Saturday, September 23: Paws at the Beach Pet Festival 2017
Start your fall off right and take your dog to the Craigville Beach in Centerville, Massachusetts for this fur family-friendly festival. You’ll find fun pet contests, adoptable pets, demonstrations, vendors, food, a silent auction and music by Cape Cod Broadcasting. Enter the Cape Cod’s Cutest Pet contest. There will be free microchipping by Cape Cod Animal Hospital, pet portraits by Tengu Photography, plus an ask-the-vet booth. All leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome. Admission is free, although you can purchase a $10 wristband to take part in special vendor giveaways and events.
Saturday and Sunday, September 23 and 24: 6th Annual Fredericksburg Pet Show
Head to Fredericksburg, Virginia for this fun fur family event at the Fredericksburg Expo Center. There will be pets available for adoption, plus area veterinarians, groomers, trainers and more. Check out the agility and therapy dog demonstrations. Bring your well-behaved leashed pet and enter the pet talent contest. Adults $8, Seniors $7 and kids under 12 are free.
Sunday, September 24: Responsible Pit Bull Ownership Workshop
BullsEye Dog Rescue & Play Bow Dog Training hosts Train-a-Pit classes for Pit Bulls and/or their owners who have little or no training experience and have limited financial resources. Workship runs from 9a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Week of September 25: Dog’s Day at The Shops at Columbus Circle
In celebration of the last full week of September being National Dog Week, The Shops at Columbus Circle open their doors to your precious pups. All leashed dogs no matter the size can jaunt through all public areas (exception restaurants and Whole Foods Market) along with their families. They can also pop in Bouchon Bakery for a foie gras dog biscuit ($7), along with a canine-gourmand of water to wash it down. Shops are open daily from 10 am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 7pm on Sundays. Located in the Time Warner Center in New York City.
Thursday, September 28: Fall Pet Party Benefiting Hurricane Animal Rescue Efforts
PetHero and Time Inc. are putting on a party at the Brookfield Place Upper Plaza in New York, NY, overlooking the Statue of Liberty and Hudson River. There will be animal adoptions from animal rescue Badass Brooklyn, a meet-and-greet with Manny the Frenchie, photo opps with your own pet, pet games, obstacle courses and a donation-based raffle with proceeds going to the Petfinder Foundation. Try a cocktail from Pups ‘n Pints with Tartinery — a portion of the proceeds go to Badass Brooklyn and hurricane relief efforts. Admission is free to the general public.
Saturday, September 30: 21st Annual Wag ‘n Walk
California’s Seal Beach Animal Care Center presents this great shelter animal benefit at the Eisenhower Park at Main and Ocean, Seal Beach from 9a.m. to 2p.m. There will be lots of shopping, food, raffles, entertainment, adoptable SBACC dogs, vendors and a dog costume contest. Don’t forget to register.
