Like other couples whose pets are their children, my partner and I have been known to bake or boil chicken breasts for our spoiled bratster, Mr. Moxie, who has wee portions of the latter with a side of quinoa or brown rice a few times a day.
In between meals, he’s free-fed kibble. (Note: this isn’t for most dogs, but we live with a spry Italian Greyhound who is obnoxiously lean considering all he consumes.) This was no trouble for his first few years with us — indeed, he was not all that excited about dry food. But late last year, we switched to a higher grade of dog food. Since then he’s been a holy terror, making holes in the food bag while we’re out to get to that sweet, sweet stash of kibble.
After a few weeks of this, I stumbled upon Simplehuman’s series of pet food cans (which could easily house bulk quantities of rice or flour if you’re into that) and emailed the company to inquire about a review sample. Simplehuman was kind enough to send over a large can, which can house as much as 32 pounds of dry food, which is perfect when you buy 30-pound bags like we do.
The cans come in medium (27-pound capacity) and XL (40 pounds), which cost between $100 and $140. I was too stupid to remove the stickers on the product before snapping these photos, but hopefully the clean lines and sleek finish aren’t lost!
I like quite a few things about this product. Topping the list is the magnetic area behind the lid that keeps the scoop close at hand — this has saved me a lot of fumbling with dry kibble between my fingers. The can also has a detachable bucket at center for easy removal and cleaning, and wheels at the bottom back corner for easy transport. And then there’s the airtight lock, which makes the whole thing worthwhile.
Moxie is a little peeved he can no longer get into the food bag, and he seemed very concerned as we were emptying its contents into the Simplehuman container. When he’s done emptying his kibble bowl he will pace in front of the can or whine at it. I almost feel sorry for the guy.
