Ghost Dogs of Aspropyrgos Saves Strays in Greece

Many consider the suburb of Aspropyrgos in Greece to be overrun with ghost dogs. These stray and often abused creatures get their spectral moniker for the way they roam the area, unclaimed and unloved.

Thankfully, the Ghost Dogs of Aspropyrgos organization helps these homeless hounds by rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding them families. Founded two years ago, the outfit is also active online and runs a regularly updated Facebook page, through which viewers can keep abreast of their favorite pups and also help out with donations and social media support.

Here are before-and-after-treatment photos of some of the most notable ghost-dog cases:

1. Hermes

German Shepherd who was found wandering the streets of Aspropyrgos with a cable wrapped around his neck, Hermes is now said to be gaining weight as he journeys back to health.

2. Betty

Betty was found with a vicious injury to her tail and infested with ticks. She’s now been happily adopted.

3. Menos

Menos was discovered with a rope tightly fixed around his neck, which caused severe injuries. He’s since found his forever home.

4. Pippis

Pippis was scooped up while she was suffering from scabies, ehrlichiosis, and leishmaniasis. The two-and-a-half-year-old Pointer mix is still undergoing treatment.

5. Eva

After being rescued in a highly malnourished state, Eva was taken to a vet and found to be suffering from mange and other related ailments. This three-year-old is currently up for adoption.

6. Hunter

Hunter was once one of Aspropyrgos’s four-legged ghosts, but has since been taken in and completed his course of treatment. This one-and-a-half-year-old Pointer mix is said to be great with other dogs!
