Historical origins aside, Thanksgiving in its modern incarnation is an opportunity to spend time with your family and reflect on the abundance we enjoy. For me that means having a day off to myself (I haven’t done holidays with my biological family in a few years) where I treat myself to dinner and a movie and hang out with all my fellow holiday orphans. I’m grateful to have the luxury to do that.
I’m grateful to live in a really cool city, to have this job where I am given permission to be myself, and to have a network of friends and chosen family who make my life a joy. I’m grateful for my health, for my stunning good looks (ha-hah), and the small pleasure of drinking coffee every morning. I’m grateful for a dog named Ambrose, who was one of my clients as a dog walker when I first moved to San Francisco — without that adorable black Labrador, I don’t think I would have been able to overcome the breakup I was going through and get to where I am today.
It’s no doubt that dogs are amazing, but I wanted to take some time to talk about why you all are grateful for your dogs. As a bonus, I’ve teamed up with P.L.A.Y. and Ricochet the SURFice Dog to give away a prize to the story of gratitude that most touches your heart. Here’s how the contest will go:
- In the comments section below, tell us in 100-150 words why you’re grateful for your dog. Entries will be entered into a random drawing to select five finalists.
- On Wednesday November 20th, we’ll announce the five finalists.
- From November 20th until the 27th, the finalists will be voted on.
- The entry with the most votes on November 27th will be the winner.
