On Sunday Morning, some bonehead drove his SUV into the Nottingham Animal Clinic of Houston, Texas. He didn’t just drive into the lobby, but all the way into the treatment and surgery rooms, smashing everything as he did so, pets included.
No dogs were injured, but one cat died. Dr. Skip Fix, the clinic’s owner, spent an hour digging through the rubble to find her, as she was due to be adopted the next day and was being housed in the front for the night. Another kitty was with her; she suffered a broken back and pelvis and was rushed into surgery the following day at a nearby hospital, where she is still in intensive care. The clinic’s bird was also injured and is staying at the receptionist’s home while he recovers.
“There was just total destruction,” Dr. Fix told KHOU. “The vehicle had probably gone about 20 feet inside the building. Luckily the other clinic cats in the very back of the kennel were all OK, but they were pretty freaked out from the commotion.”
As you can well imagine: The driver had pushed the surgery wall into the room with the kennels. According to a YouCaring page set up to help cover the costs of rebuilding the clinic, the cats are still “wigged out.”
As for our bonehead, after smashing through the clinic, he tried to back out, failed, and took off running. Police are still looking for the man, and Dr. Fix thinks he was drunk and the car was stolen.
The YouCaring page is hoping to receive $25,000, and after just a couple days, it’s nearly there. The clinic expects insurance to cover some of the cost of rebuilding, but the YouCaring page states, “Who knows how long it will take and what will be covered.” This money can be put to use right away.
“This is time to pay it forward,” continues the statement on the YouCaring page. “This is an amazing clinic run by a team of kindhearted and generous people who make Houston, and the world, a better place. Help us get them back to doing what they do best … saving our furry friends and keeping our loved ones healthy and happy. Please donate if you can and share this story. Let’s use the power of social media for good and give this vet clinic the money to get the rebuilding process started!”
To bolster its case, the fundraising campaign features stories and photos of the animals Dr. Fix and his team has helped throughout the years, such as Pumpkin, a dog who was shot in the spine with a BB gun. Here are more photos of the clinic in better days:
