Do you live in the Los Angeles area and have a swimming pool? If so, there’s a dog who would love to borrow it for a little bit. Even better, his owner is willing to pay for the privilege of using your pool.
In what must be one of the most touching posts to show up on Craigslist for a while, a woman named Jenny is reaching out to find someplace she can take Waylon, her 10-year-old, severely arthritic dog, to have a little fun and relief from the constant pain that plagues him:
I’m Jenny, mom to a fabulous, almost 10-years-old rescue dog named Waylon. Waylon is a big guy, getting on in years, and suffers from arthritis. He can no longer go hiking, or on runs, or chase balls, or have rambunctious playtime. He’s happiest when he’s swimming, pain-free, and weightless. It’s kind of the cutest thing ever.
That’s where you come in. While Waylon and I are apartment-dwellers, I think, surely there is a dog-lover in the Los Angeles area with a pool, who would be willing to let me use it to give Waylon some swim therapy once or maybe twice a week, just for 20-30 minutes at a time. We’re both well-behaved and nice, I promise.
In exchange for helping her dog have a little comfort and a little fun, Jenny is offering cash or barter: Teaching you how to cook vegan meals, doing PR work or event planning (her day job) — even maybe even mowing your lawn, if that’s what you need.
The situation probably seems very familiar to a lot of dog owners. Not only because it depicts the trauma of watching a beloved pet age and suffer in such a heartbreaking way, but it also represents a classic dilemma for apartment dwellers in urban areas. Sometimes the realities of city living just make it hard to give your dog the things that they need for a pleasurable, fun life. In this case, pools are hard to come by if your income is only average, and we really hope that Jenny finds someplace that Waylon can play. “Making Waylon’s remaining time on the mortal coil as pain-free and fun as possible is most-important to me,” she writes, “and if you have a pool you could let us use, I’d be so forever grateful.”
